Burning Man The City, Community, and People

Warning - there is nudity and a wide variety of people and experiences in the pictures, but they are not taken in a way that should be offensive to anyone.  They are meant to document the freedom of expression that is Burning Man.

Above is the map of Black Rock City 2002.  The theme was the Floating World hence the nautical theme to the map.  As you look at the map the road in is at the center bottom, the circle above that is center camp, and above that you see the man.  The city covered over a half circle and you can see the roads wrap around.  The camp we were in, Garage Mahal, was at the yellow section to the left.  We were at the corner of 240 and Midships.  The roads were named to go with the nautical theme.  The shaded areas are registered theme camps and the area around the man is where art is placed and shown.

1) The name says it all, Burning Man.  The main event is Saturday night and they burn The Man.  Here you can see the Man during the day.  It is standing on a lighthouse to go with the Floating World theme.  2) The man at night.  3 and 4) I feel these are good pictures of the city.  They were taken from the top of our Art car and show lots of people and parts of the camp.  In these pictures you will see many different ages and types of dress, some people are playing instruments, dancing, watching, or just trying to get somewhere.  5) This is the open playa during the approach of a dust storm.  We had great weather for most of the week except for this one day, Friday.

1) This is a view of center camp.  Center camp was an area for lots of different performance art including poetry reading and music.  It had a cafe which served coffee drinks and in general was a gathering and relaxing area.  2 and 3) These pictures are taken of the end of the water truck.  A water truck would drive the roads spraying them down to keep the dust down.  People would run behind the truck and shower.  Some would run for quite awhile, soaping up and everything.  It was funny to watch!  4) Yes, there was lots of nudity but most of it wasn't really sexual.  We were talking to this couple asking what color she was going to be but she was covered with glitter because it was her birthday.  They were so relaxed and nice.  As the week went on we noticed lots of green men.  5) This is an excellent picture of community.  This was at the Sunday night burn.  On the last night many of the artists burn their art.  At this burn, they had really good music and everyone was just spontaneously dancing around the fire.  It was beautiful.  As a note there are people near the fire trying to making sure it is safe.

1)  This is a picture of our art car at the Sunday night burn.  I think it is amazing how many people are on the car.  2) Some people dressed in complete costumes.  These two guys were space men.  3) All the sunsets were beautiful but this one was the best.  It was Friday night after the dust storm and there were a few raindrops falling here and there.  The clouds helped with the sunset.  4) I wish this picture was a little better.  This was our Thursday sunrise crew.  It was neat how we brought all the couches and rugs and everyone curled up with their drinks to watch the sunrise.  A great feeling of community surrounded us that morning. 5) This was a little later at sunrise. All 5 are members of Garage Mahal, Dixon, Squeeze, Joe, Carolina (spelling?), and Big Cheez.

These are some example of some of the amazing camps that were built only to be torn down in a week. 1) The pod camp; 2) This was a bar, there were lots of bars and clubs.  3) An interesting camp; 4) This ride was put on by a group from Detroit who were in the Snowflake camp.  The snowflake camp was a camp for Midwestern and Canadian artists.  5) The Sponge Bob camp.
